At first, walking into Shadows (formerly Sideway) for Discobasis’ EP launch, Said the Light, felt like stepping into Stranger Things’ The Upside Down. The space, curated with intent, created a dissonance from reality– the dim glow of red light, the haze in the air and the draped tulle installations hanging from the ceiling complemented the stretching and bending of sound through the atmosphere. As the crowd settled into the room, the depth and intensity of the music led listeners into a meditative hypnosis.

The Soundtrack

Discobasis delivered a set full of textured ambient tech- a mix of elements that shouldn’t sit in harmony but did. Punchy kicks, natural drums and reverberating hits, punctuated crunchy digital snares and ambient pads, swaying between unease and transcendence. The EP’s raw power offered a harmony of light and moody, smooth and angular, tension and release.

Supporting sets from
Emmie, umki, and Paris/Eora-based Gillielove added to the fever dream aesthetic. Each artist wove their own sonic narrative into the night. The music morphed from deep listening to movement-inducing, from introspective to urgent. As the crowd moved, the rhythms turned —"aggravated slow ambient tech with dollopy percussive sounds," as one listener described it.

The Birth of Stock Grazing

While Said the Light marked Discobasis’ debut, it also signaled the launch of Stock Grazing. Founded by Isaac Bryson (Turning Tables) and Rory Bolger (Sunburn), Stock Grazing is a multidisciplinary platform dedicated to deep listening, experimental sounds, and unfiltered creative expression. “The label is meant to be something pressure-less and personable.” Isaac told us after the event. Much like the night itself, it seems the platform is not about spectacle but rather immersion.

Reflections on The Night

The night established Discobasis and Stock Grazing as forces in the experimental music space. Those lucky enough to attend didn’t just witness an EP launch—they temporarily set foot into another dimension.
